Review: Duke with Benefits

Duke with Benefits Duke with Benefits by Manda Collins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

'Duke with Benefits' by Manda Collins is book Two in the "Studies in Scandal" series. This is the story of Lady Daphne Forsyth and Dalton Beauchamp, the Duke of Maitland. I have read the the previous book and Daphne and Dalton did meet in there. Also we learn some of Daphne's outspokenness that sometimes needed some censoring. But this can be a standalone book for sure. Daphne and three other ladies have inherited an estate from Lady Celeste Beauchamp who along with the other ladies was also a 'Bluestocking'. Although each lady has a different academic study they all are very smart and bookish. Dalton who has feelings for Daphne has gone into protective mode. It seems each lady has a quest set upon them by Lady Celeste that leads them into danger.
I must say this series has everything you could want. It has a mystery story mixed into this Bluestocking love story.
Loved this series and this book! Can't wait for the next story to come out!

Review: The Highland Commander

The Highland Commander The Highland Commander by Amy Jarecki
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

'The Highland Commander' by Amy Jarecki is book Two in the "Lords of the Highlands" series. This is the story of Lady Magdalen 'Maddie 'Keith and Aiden Murray. This can easily be a standalone book.
Maddie is the illegitimate daughter of an Earl. Once her father married the wife did not want her in site and so she was raised with a ladies maid. Aiden is the second son of an Earl and with that being the case he has been grated freedom that an heir wouldn't have. So Aiden had joined the Scottish Naval to go forward with his life. There on a outing from the ship he happens to meet Maddie at a Masquerade ball that he is attending with his fellow workers. Maddie is allowed to attend since it is a Masquerade ball that her father is giving and it will be a chance to see him in an open setting. But her chance meeting with Aiden has left her breathless but they both know that they won't see each other again.
About a year or so later Maddie is asked by her Step Mother to help her father who has been taken in for treason. Maddie who has never been useful or wanted by her Step Mother before now needs her it seems. Maddie goes forward to be the voice for her father but things just doesn't go very easily for her.
Aiden happens to come to the aid of a women who he quick realizes it is Maddie from the Masquerade ball. Aiden takes her into his family home to give her a place to stay while she is trying to sort out this business with her father.
Aiden and Maddie don't have a easy time of it but with Love it always wins in the end!

Review: Forgetting You, Forgetting Me

Forgetting You, Forgetting Me Forgetting You, Forgetting Me by Monica James
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

'Forgetting You, Forgetting Me' By Monica James is the story of Lucy, Sam and Saxon.
This does end with a cliffhanger... to keep their story going into the next book.
I will tell you now that I think this is the best book Ms. James has written so far. It takes you on a great emotional roller coaster ride that you just have to hand on to your book and keep going!
Lucy was adopted by very loving parents and from a early teen years started to have a crush on Sam. Sam and Saxon were very different brothers on the inside but on the outside it was hard to tell them apart unless they showed their character differences. But Lucy just knew she loved Sam and they did progress to dating, living together and then getting engaged. But on the day of their wedding, Sam was in a serious car accident. Now everything had changed from having it all to not sure what you are doing. Saxon has been estranged from his family and they don't even acknowledge him when the Dr ask if there are any siblings we could notify in case blood or a kidney might be needed. Lucy is the one that tells the Dr that there is a brother and makes the call for him to come home.
Things for Lucy and Sam are no longer certain due to his mental health and now that Saxon is back...Lucy is finding him way to attractive. Saxon has step up help support Lucy while Sam is not being his normal self to Lucy. Which is opening new feelings for Lucy and wondering if she may have picked the wrong brother.
Just loved this book....can't wait to see where their story goes!

Welcome Tara Kingston for a Hosting Spotlight!

Thank you for hosting me today, Sissy. It’s a pleasure to stop by your blog and discuss books and reading romance.

Since I was a girl, not quite a teen, I’ve loved novels with elements of mystery and romance. My mother read gothic romances by Victoria Holt and Barbara Michaels, and before long, I was devouring these tales of endangered governesses and brooding heroes as fast as I could get my hands on them. As a teenager, my tastes veered to passionate historical romances with alpha-male heroes, but I never lost my appreciation for romance with a bit of mystery.

I’ve been thinking about my favorite historical romances. There are so many books and authors that I love, it’s really hard to narrow the list down. My favorites change depending on my mood. Some of the romances I treasure are recent additions to my keeper shelf, while many have long occupied a spot on my bookcase (and now, my e-reader). A few stand out as being particularly close to my heart. Here are a sampling of those books that will always have a place in this reader’s heart:

~ Thief of Hearts by Teresa Medeiros
A to-die-for pirate and a gorgeous, charming bodyguard (who wears glasses…one of my weaknesses in a hero!) in the same romance—What’s a heroine to do? I adore this spirited tale of intrigue, revenge, redemption, and true love.

~ For the Roses by Julie Garwood

One of the most touching and romantic stories I’ve ever read, For the Roses holds a special place in my heart. After I read this book, I devoured Julie Garwood’s books about the Claybourne brothers. This tale of a young woman in the American West, her four brothers-of-the-heart, and the man who captures her heart showcases family loyalties (even if those family ties are not through blood) and true love in the form of a man with a secret that may well shatter the heroine’s life. Of course, there is a happily-ever-after. The hero is not only handsome and seductive, but he’s scorchingly smart… truly sigh-worthy!

~ Ravished by Amanda Quick

A brooding, enigmatic, and protective hero and endearing bluestocking heroine in a Regency-set love story with a touch of mystery and Beauty and the Beast feel—I adored it!

~ The Wings of the Falcon by Barbara Michaels

This intrigue-filled old-school Gothic romance features an unusual setting (Italy), a bit of mystery, and a smidge of adventure. An orphaned heroine encounters two handsome and enigmatic brothers—one is a heroic revolutionary in disguise, a man who’s captured her heart. This book may feel a little corny to some, but it holds a special place in my heart.

My taste for intrigue factors into my own historical romances. My latest release, When A Lady Dares, features a heroine who’s a covert agent drawn into a sinister mystery with life-and-death stakes. Here’s a little about the story:

A daring agent confronts a notorious rogue, but who's seducing who?

In Victorian London, secret agent Sophie Atherton connives her way into a phony medium’s confidence, searching for clues to a string of mysterious deaths. When archaeologist Gavin Stanwyck seeks out the charlatan’s services, Sophie suspects he’s after more than a long-lost heirloom. Their electric attraction storms her defenses, but she steels her heart. Uniting to survive a sinister plot, the daring spy and cynical rake must tear down their defenses and learn to trust their hearts.

New Moon by Lisa Kessler

Title: New Moon
Series: The Moon Series
Author: Lisa Kessler
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 19, 2017
Sometimes Fate plays dirty... Jaguar shifter Sebastian Severino is an enigma. He lives alone, works alone, and will die alone. But the night he’s attacked by a female werewolf, nothing will ever be the same. And when his young niece is kidnapped, Sebastian, the deadliest assassin Nero has ever produced, will be forced to choose a side... Isabelle Wood has never taken the easy path. As a bounty hunter and now a bitten werewolf without a mate, she’s searching for answers to her father’s disappearance while helping to lead an Alphaless Pack. The night she gets the opportunity to take out their enemy, with her blade at his throat, her wolf discovers her mate in the last person she can be with.

I didn’t take the elevator down. The stairs were more private. That asshole had pointed a goddamn gun at me. He’d cocked it. And still my wolf was howling, crying out for her mate. I wanted to scream. The farther I got from him, the worse my heart ached.

Maybe the wolf would mellow out in time. I’d run back to my place, pack, and hit the road for Reno without ever looking back.

That was probably Sebastian’s plan from the beginning. He was a master manipulator. I had to give him that.

I hustled past the valet to the self-parking lot in the shadows. Inside my car, I blew out a pent-up breath and put the key in the ignition. Before I could start the engine, a hand tapped on my window.

There was Sebastian, shirtless, his dark eyes locked on mine. “Wait.”

He didn’t yell. He didn’t need to for my keen ears to hear him. Without moving a muscle, I asked, “Why? Give me one good reason.”

He put his hands up and slowly knelt to my level. “I don’t have one.”

I glared at him through the glass. “You’ll have to do better than that.”

He clenched his teeth but didn’t break eye contact. “I want…damn it.” He looked toward the back of the car.

I pressed the button, lowering my window, his scent intoxicating me. “You pulled your gun on me.”

His gaze snapped to my face. “And you didn’t defend yourself.”

“If you wanted me dead, you wouldn’t make a bloody mess in a hotel room, and besides, you didn’t have a silencer on it.” I shook my head slowly. “You’re too good to be sloppy.”

“How do you…”

I rolled my eyes. “How do I what?”

“Understand me.” He searched my face—for what, I had no clue. His voice was barely a whisper. “I was trying to protect you.”

“By aiming a gun at me?” I clucked my tongue. “That’s not usually how it works.”

He struggled to bite back a smile, and butterflies fluttered in my stomach. When he wasn’t a deadly asshole, he was way too handsome. He lifted his head, and his dark hair fell into his face. The smile was gone. Hunger burned in his eyes.

“My father ordered a hit on the last woman I cared about, simply to remind me he had the power.”

My heart thumped in my chest. “What does that have to do with pointing a loaded gun at me?”

“I was too weak to tell you to leave, so I let the gun do it for me. You’re in danger if you keep digging into Nero. I was trying to keep you safe.”

A laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it. “You’re obviously much better at killing than protecting.”

He nodded slowly. “True.”

“None of this explains why you’re out here shirtless asking me not to drive away.”

“Because…” He shook his head, staring at the pavement. “It doesn’t make sense.” He straightened up and took a step back from my car.

Damn, even in the dim lighting his muscled torso distracted me, the shadows accentuating every curve and angle.

“Until you stabbed me, I was excellent at”—he held up his right hand, extending a finger for each point—“lying, determining a course of action, and distancing myself from the job at hand.”

“And now?” I raised a brow.

“Now…” He groaned, cursing under his breath. His gaze met mine. “I’m confused and indecisive. I fucking hate it, and it could get us both killed.”

“I’m not sure what you want from me, but I’m not going to apologize.”

“An apology isn’t what I want.” He ground his teeth, his voice a hoarse whisper. “I’ve shielded you from my father for years, but now…I want you, Isabelle. And that could cost you your life. I came to say I lied to my father today, not to you. I couldn’t let you drive away without knowing. You were never a pawn. Not to me.”
