A Pledge of Passion by Victoria Vane is book two in "The Rules of Engagement" series. It is the story of Lady Mariah Morehaven and Nicolas Needham .
Nicolas and Mariah met and were quickly drawn to one another and shared a kiss. Right after the kiss Nicolas asked that Mariah wait for him as he tries to build income and be able to afford a wife. They agree she will wait a year an he will let her know by then what he can do.
A year later Nicolas sends a note saying he won't be able to marry her. Mariah father has died and she has inherited a title, land and money...and knows that she will have to marry to help maintain everything. She goes to 'town' and meets Nicolas again. Nicolas has found a 'job' that will give him some money and he thinks he can now move forward with Mariah but he finds someone else has her on the marriage list....it is his new 'boss'.
