River of Shadows by Karina Halle is the First book in the Underworld Gods Series.  This starts the story of Hanna Heikkinen who has traveled to Finland because she thinks her father has passed.  When she arrives she starts to learn that he may not be dead and that their is a whole paranormal type world that he maybe held hostage in.  This leads her to travel. and fine the Land of Death to rescue her father.  There she meets God of Death who she makes deal with her life for her fathers. This is a revamp of the mythology tale called 'Death and the Maiden'.  This book does end in a cliffhanger setting us up for the next installment in their story.
